Middle School Rebuild Update ... COMMUNITY LISTENING SESSION Aug 16th 6-8pm. Join us!

Updated: Aug 2, 2023

Please join us for a MIDDLE SCHOOL SITE LISTENING SESSION on Aug 16th 6-8pm at the City Wide Community Center (14 Canterbury Rd). All are welcome! Please RSVP here.

MIDDLE SCHOOL REBUILD - CURRENT SITUATION

On July 10th, 2023, after months of exploring potential sites for a new middle school, the Concord School District presented two locations to the School Board for discussion. The two sites include:

  1. The current grounds of the existing Rundlett Middle School, which has a 20-acre area available for the construction of a new school building; and

  2. A 56-acre parcel of raw land on South Curtisville Road, near Broken Ground School and Mill Brook School.

Concord Greenspace is not currently taking a stance for or against either of these middle school site locations. At present, we see our role as threefold:

  1. Holding the school board accountable for thoroughly evaluating both sites;

  2. Assessing the options and identifying ways to mitigate any disadvantages of the chosen site; and

  3. Facilitating opportunities for all voices to be heard.

We feel the community's deep understanding and discussion of the pros and cons of each site is critical to the decision making process.

COMMUNITY FEEDBACK

To that end, we are gathering community feedback to present to the School Board:

  • On July 22nd, we held a community "Walk & Talk" from Broken Ground to Regency Arms Apartments to explore what the walk would be like for middle schoolers who live within the 1.5 mile radius walk zone. What was clear to all who participated was that one misstep by a student from the sidewalk onto East Side Drive would likely result in tragedy. If the community is in favor of the Broken Ground site, the walking routes will need to be critically examined and the necessary changes made to keep students safe.

  • On August 16th, we are hosting a community Middle School Site Listening Session from 6-8pm - please join us! RSVP here.

  • If you are unable to attend the Listening Session in person but have thoughts on the advantages and disadvantages of the two proposed site locations, please share them on our website here! Your responses will be posted anonymously on our online REBUILD Community Page here.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SITE LISTENING SESSION

August 16th 6-8pm - City Wide Community Center - 14 Canterbury. RSVP here.

Please join us on August 16th from 6-8pm at the City Wide Community Center for a Middle School Site Listening Session. Concord Greenspace will start off the evening briefly presenting the pros and cons of each of the two middle school sites under official consideration. Then, the floor will be open to the public for YOUR thoughts, concerns and ideas. School Board members Sarah Robinson, Bob Cotton, and Cara Meeker are planning to attend and all School Board members have been invited. All are welcome! (RSVP here).

We strongly encourage you to attend the August 16th Listening Session. This is the time to show up, listen to, and engage with other members of the Concord community on this important decision. Amongst other considerations, it is critical to discuss challenges the proposed sites present for many of our hard-to-reach community members. The middle school site location will be of significant impact to families who may lack personal transportation or who otherwise experience barriers in school and community access. Currently, we are working hard to find translators and community leaders who can assist us in bringing these community members' voices to the table. We would deeply appreciate any and all help in this effort. concordgreenspace@gmail.com

SCHOOL DISTRICT PUBLIC HEARINGS

It is our understanding that public hearings will be held by the Concord School District. We will keep you informed of those sessions. Please subscribe to our blog for updates.

ONLINE FEEDBACK FORM

If you are unable to attend the Listening Session in person but have thoughts on the advantages and disadvantages of the two proposed site locations, please share them on our website here. Your responses will be posted anonymously on our REBUILD Community Page here.

Gratefully,

Concord Greenspace
